RosieQueen Latifah was born Dana Elaine Owens on March 18th, 1970 in Newark, New Jersey. Latifah, the second child of Lance Owens and Rita Owens is well-known for her social politics and acting abilities, as well as her gift for rhyme. When she was 8 years old her Muslim cousin named her Latifah which translates to "delicate" as well as "sensitive" in Arabic. Latifah began singing with the choir at Shiloh Baptist Church in Bloomfield, New Jersey, and had her first public performance in which she sang a version of "Home" as one of two Dorothys in a stage production of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's parochial school. Latifah's mother was a catalyst. She was very attuned to students and the music. Mark James, a local disc jockey, also known as D.J., was invited to the event. Mark the 45 King was invited to perform at a dance school.
